mufin.com, a music finder
ein bunter Strauß musikalischer Überraschungen

Während mir last.fm zum Stichwort “Eagles of Death Metal” Bands aus dem Genre oder mit ähnlicher Besetzung, wie “Queens of the Stone Age” oder “Fu Manchu” empfielt, rät mir Mufin zu Udo Jürgens oder einer Band namens “The Ashes of Creation”. Allerdings nur für das Eagles of Death Metal Lied “Only want you”. Für einen anderen Titel kommen entsprechend andere Empfehlungen, die bei mir auf eine Mischung aus Irritation und Amüsement stoßen.

The mouse is as good as dead.

interesting article about the “death” of the computer mouse

mouse’s dominance as the leading pointing devices may be over within 2 to 4 years

the author Mike Elgan point out that developments like

1. Apple’s giant trackpad with multi-touch.
2. Gaming pointing devices.
3. “Brain-reading” devices.
4. Apple iPhone and the “iPhone Killers.”

are changing our mouse habits.

Besides the author predicts that the next generation of operating systems will also contribute to the death of mice

Microsoft has already announced that Windows 7 will be optimized for Microsoft Surface-like touch interfaces. And I’m confident that Apple will take advantage of its many patents for “multi-touch” systems

What does your city sound like?

Field Recording 2.0 with DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow initiated a competition in which the participants are using mobile phones to record the sounds that define their city. The uploaded sounds are later reviewed by DJ Shadow to be part of a music track.

excerpt of the creative brief:

This cutting edge music experiment offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to co-create a track with DJ Shadow using modern mobile technology. Entitled “What does your city sound like?” DJ Shadow wants you to send him audio recordings of what you think are the most interesting and unique sounds of your city, from which he will create a totally original track.
Nokia Trends Lab will upload the various audio recordings received at www.nokiatrendslab.com for DJ Shadow to choose the city which he feels has submitted the most interesting sounds in order to create an exclusive mix for that city

upload your city sound ;-)

Dance Chimes

dance chimesPedestrian area in Wiesbaden, Germany
designed by Alfons Van Leggelo.

The dance chimes connect movement with sound experience.
Nine bronze tiles, equipped with mechanical sound elements are
placed in a square casing. The sound elements below the tiles are being activated through the energy of movement.

Berlin Tenori-On launch event

On Tuesday I attended the Tenori-On lauch event at the Berghain Club in Berlin. Toshio Iwai, one of the inventors gave a little presentation and talked about the background of this project. He introduced some of his older projects for example “Piano – As Image Media”, “Composition on the Table” or the Nintendo DS videogame Electroplankton.

In the following video (excerpt 8.42) Iwai talks almost about the same things he refered to in his presentation:

relevancy
The Tenori-On is of course interesting for my work – especially because it’s a commercial product. The older projects of Toshio Iwai that are software and hardware based are also quite exciting.

An interesting quote from the pixelsurgeon interview to think of:

“I feel in the future, analogue and digital will be mixed together more closely, and its border will be obscure naturally.” (Toshio Iwai)

[new focus] master studies

A week ago I started my master studies at the interface design department of FH Potsdam, Germany. My main research interest is tangible user interfaces with a focus on musical instruments.

I will use this blog as a repository of relevant or interesting topics regarding my projects and research.
For me this blog is a tool to keep track of things I encounter during research and is a perfect way to share my thoughts with others, to start conversations and create connections.

Arduino+RFID

This code lets the Arduino read the TRANSPONDERSYSTEM RFID LESER 1 PLUS reader ( Conrad). Once connected and programmed, prints the tag number in the serial monitor window.

Hardware connections:

  • Arduino RX (PIN0) to RFID TX (PIN4)
  • Arduino TX (PIN1) to RFID RX (PIN5)
  • Arduino GND to RFID GND (PIN6)
  • Arduino 5V to RFID 5V (PIN1)
